John McDermott Evening was Fantastic!
John McDermott’s hauntingly beautiful tenor tones, combined with his relaxed, easygoing story-telling made for an unforgettably entertaining evening for the guests at Askennonia’s Gala 2008. John’s family tales about “The Old Man” brought tears to many eyes, while “I’m My Own Grandpa” had everyone is stitches. I don’t think anyone in attendance will ever listen to “Loch Lomond” without thinking about the young soldier who took the low road. All in all, the performance could not have been more enjoyable (read on). ELM Catering put on a lovely prime rib dinner, which was complimented by Colio wine. Many accolades were received for the new Georgian Bay Dipper by Midland Beer Works, who were one of our sponsors. Thanks to all members who assisted with the ticket and sponsor sales, set up and volunteered at the Gala and to Brian Dent, Val Carnduff, Darlyn Hughes and Jackie Sture, who donated lovely 'Askennonia made" woodcarvings, beaded work and watercolour for the draw. Thanks also to the Community Services staff at the Rec. Centre, who consistently go above and beyond to make things sure events run smoothly. That goes for everything from set-up, to operation of the bar, to cooperative support, as needed, during the event. Special thanks to Mariette Gratton who provided musical ambiance as guests arrived (or as Mariette put it, “Opened for John McDermott!”)
An event of this caliber would not have been possible without the generous support of many local businesses and organizations, including The Villa Retirement Lodge, Tim Hortons, The Bayfield House Retirement Lodge, Asselin Insurance Brokers, Barber & Haskill, Chay 93.1 FM, Colio Wines, Don Wright Motors, ELM Catering, First for Safety, Georgian Bay Dipper Beer, Huronia Alarm & Security, HS St Amant & Sons, Little Lake Village A&R Carpentry, Midland Home Building Centre, Midland Lions Club, Midland TIM-BR MART, Midland Toyota, Mink Insurance, Nicholls Funeral Home, Panache Spa Works, Penetanguishene Funeral Home, SerendipiTea, Super 8 Motel, Sunsport Signs, TD Canada Trust Bank, The Ivy Basket, The Mirror and Tom Smith Chevrolet.
Of course, the evening would not have been successful without the demonstrated support of the community through attendance. We are very aware that there are a number of fundraising events during the next couple of months, and we are very appreciative that you chose to support the Senior Centre. Askennonia fundraises over $35,000 per year in order to keep programs affordable for our local 55+ residents of North Simcoe. Thank you and hope to see you next year!

John McDermott
I can't believe that John McDermott is coming to Midland. He is the greatest!! I saw him a few years ago in the city downtown TO, and he played to a huge audience. It was a spectacular show. Way to go seniors.
