Poetry Says It All!
Let's Write meets Monday afternoons and their stories are often published in the monthly newsletter (available by clicking newsletter tab above). Here's a terrific submission by board member, Earl Veale. What a great advertisement for Askennonia Senior Centre! Be sure to click on "Read the full story", as there's lots more poem to enjoy.
Askennonia
by Earl Veale – Let’s Write
If you feel sad or kind of blue
we have just the place for you.
Askennonia.
If you like to joke, and laugh, and sing,
the Coffee House is just the thing
at Askennonia.
Let's Write Program a Great Resolution!
Mon. afternoons John Philips leads a creative writing class where participants produce short stories, essays and poems. It's all about having fun, accomplishing that most-requested task of 'getting things on paper' and learning about writing. John is a retired English teacher, published author and just a real nice man. Here's a sample of a poem that Lydia Ehmcke wrote that describes her feelings about the class. (Hit "read the full story" to see complete poem.)
Let's Write by Lydia Ehmcke
I want to write a poem,
What shall it be about?
I have to put my mind to it
Weekly Programs Keep Men Active!
Askennonia has lots of activities that are traditonally male-oriented. A group play table tennis on Mon & Wed mornings. The art of woodcarving (Wednesday afternoons) is considered masculine, although we have lots of women who participate. There is a healthy representation of guys in both the bid euchre and bridge groups, as well as, in all our exercise classes and tai chi. Many gentlemen enroll in art classes. The point is, that men should not consider themselves exempt from having a little fun or learning something new.
